Gijsbrecht Nieuwland studied Dutch law in Leiden, specialising in civil law. During several years of his studies, he taught Roman property law as student assistant to the Legal History Department. After completing his studies in Leiden, Gijsbrecht took a postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford, with specific attention to English contract law, transnational commercial law and legal history.
Since March 2010, Gijsbrecht has been a lawyer at Pels Rijcken, where he is part of the sections of the cassation and criminal law. Its field of activity as a cassation lawyer includes, in particular, property law (goods and contract law), corporate law, public liability law and the law of the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. As a member of the Criminal Justice Section, Gijsbrecht is also involved in civil (short-term proceedings) proceedings on the enforcement of penalties, damages and criminal proceedings.
Gijsbrecht Nieuwland studeerde Nederlands recht in Leiden, met als specialisatie Burgerlijk recht. Gedurende enkele jaren van zijn studietijd doceerde hij, als student-assistent van de afdeling rechtsgeschiedenis, Romeins goederenrecht. Na voltooiing van zijn studie in Leiden, heeft Gijsbrecht een postgraduate opleiding aan de Universiteit van Oxford gevolgd, met specifieke aandacht voor Engels contractenrecht, transnationaal handelsrecht en rechtsgeschiedenis.
Sinds maart 2010 is Gijsbrecht advocaat bij Pels Rijcken, waar hij deel uitmaakt van de secties Cassatie en Strafrecht. Tot zijn werkterrein als cassatieadvocaat behoren met name het vermogensrecht (goederen- en verbintenissenrecht), het ondernemingsrecht, het overheidsaansprakelijkheidsrecht en het recht van het Caribische deel van het Koninkrijk. Tevens houdt Gijsbrecht zich, als lid van de sectie Strafrecht, bezig met civiele (kort geding) procedures over tenuitvoerlegging van straffen, schadevergoeding en strafvorderlijk beslag.
