Since 1983, after graduating from the University of Groningen in both Dutch law and notarial law, Lya has been working as a lawyer. She worked for the first years of law in Almelo, then in Rotterdam and then in Leeuwarden at the end of 1995. Since October 2010, Lya has been working at De Haan Lawyers & Notaries..
After several years of general practice, Lya has been dealing with the Law of the Person and Family since mid-1987 and for some time also with the Law of the Inheritance. In the early 1990s, Lya has been trained as a divorce mediator and is also a mediator in Personal and Family Law and Inheritance Law.
As a lawyer, Lya represents the interests of one of the parties. In People's and Family Law and Inheritance Law, conflicts often occur between people who have been in a relationship with each other for years. As a mediator, Lya guides those people to find a solution to their conflict themselves.

Sinds 1983 is Lya na aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen te zijn afgestudeerd in zowel Nederlands recht als notarieel recht werkzaam als advocaat. De eerste jaren van de advocatuur heeft zij gewerkt in Almelo, daarna in Rotterdam en vervolgens vanaf eind 1995 in Leeuwarden. Sinds oktober 2010 werkt Lya bij De Haan Advocaten & Notarissen..
Na enige jaren algemene praktijk houdt Lya zich vanaf medio 1987 bezig met alleen het Persoon- en Familierecht en sinds enige tijd ook met het Erfrecht. Begin jaren ’90 heeft Lya de opleiding tot scheidingsmediator gevolgd en is zij ook als mediator in het Persoon- en Familierecht en Erfrecht werkzaam.
Als advocaat behartigt Lya de belangen van een van partijen. In het Personen- en Familierecht en Erfrecht spelen vaak conflicten tussen mensen die al jaren lang met elkaar een relatie hebben (gehad). Als mediator begeleidt Lya die mensen om hen zelf tot een oplossing van hun conflict te laten komen.
