Civil Law · Ontario, Canada
Lawyer · Lawrence J Cohen · Hamilton
Joshua S. Cohen was called to the Bar in 2001 and practices law from Hamilton, serving clients in Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area on Ontario legal matters. His work spans civil litigation, estates and trusts, real estate, employment law, family law, criminal defence, personal injury, and business and corporate law.
Joshua approaches legal work as both an analytical and human process. He takes time to understand the history behind a matter, the immediate legal issue and the practical consequences that different choices may create. Clients receive direct advice about the strengths, risks and available paths, with an emphasis on making the next decision clear.
Where a matter can be resolved through focused negotiation or another consensual process, Joshua works toward a practical agreement. Where court intervention is required, he prepares carefully and advocates with purpose.
In addition to law, Joshua has maintained a longstanding practice as a yoga and meditation teacher.
Shortly after his call to the Bar, a ten-day silent retreat in India deepened his interest in the relationship between attention, perception and decision-making. After completing teacher training at Toronto’s Downward Dog Yoga Centre in 2003, he went on to teach students ranging in age from 12 to 101 through classes, workshops and discussions.
His teaching has included work in yoga studios and teacher-training programs, athletic clubs, hospitals, retirement communities and professional settings. He is particularly proud of his work with the Baycrest/Wagman senior community and with war veterans and psychiatric inpatients at Sunnybrook Hospital.
