Lawyer · Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP · Ottawa
Marc Crandall has a specialized litigation practice focused on intellectual property, competition and tax disputes. As a partner based in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office, he has represented some of the world’s largest technology and pharmaceutical companies, including OpenAI, Google, LG and Takeda, among others, and regularly acts for small and medium-sized businesses.
Before practising law, Marc spent more than 10 years practising as a professional engineer. He draws on that experience to quickly understand complex technologies and businesses and identify the technological, business and legal issues at the heart of a dispute.
In his competition practice, Marc has acted as counsel in several matters before the Competition Tribunal. He was counsel to the respondents in the first two Competition Act applications under the expanded abuse of dominance provisions permitting private parties to commence such proceedings (Apotex v Takeda – CT-2023-007; JAMP v Janssen – CT-2024-006).
Marc’s tax practice focuses on disputes before the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Courts. He previously spent more than a year as counsel with the Department of Justice, litigating tax disputes on behalf of the Crown. He draws on his experience as Crown counsel to pursue practical and efficient resolutions to tax disputes.
Clients have noted Marc’s ability to quickly understand their businesses and technologies, provide clear support and advice, and develop practical solutions to the issues they face.
In 2022, Marc was named a “Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch” lawyer by Best Lawyers™ in Canada. He also teaches an intellectual property course at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law.
