About

The principal of Mitchell Litigation, Peter Mitchell, was born and raised in the Hillcrest Village neighbourhood of Toronto. Since obtaining a B.A. in politics and history from the University of Toronto’s St. Michael’s College and an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa Law School, he has litigated in Toronto for over three decades.

Pete began his legal career as a collection litigator with the Municipal Trust Company after becoming licensed as a lawyer in 1990. Despite being promoted to general counsel within two years of his hiring, an opportunity to litigate a broader cross-section of legal issues prompted him to accept a position with Tarion Warranty Corporation.

While in-house at Tarion, Pete variously divided his time between advocacy, retaining and instructing outside counsel, drafting critical stakeholder agreements and managing both the corporation’s security release system and collection department. Over the course of his decade long relationship with Tarion, Pete facilitated the recovery of corporate receivables totalling over $20 million and, together with his team of outside litigators, established a number of legal precedents which served to meaningfully enhance the fairness, effectiveness and viability of Ontario’s new home consumer protection and industry licensing regime.

Eager to take on new challenges, Pete moved on from Tarion in 2005 to a position at a downtown construction litigation boutique where, over the course of nearly two decades of complex, high value construction litigation, he gained a reputation within the Toronto construction bar as a formidable advocate, savvy negotiator and all ‘round good guy.

When not litigating, Pete has applied the same alacrity and zeal which has come to define his litigation practice to various sporting pursuits including minor hockey (coaching his Ted Reeve Thunder teams to a pair of city championships), competitive squash (of the doubles variety) and competitive ball hockey. An amateur renovator as well, he justifies long hours spent gutting and restoring his century home in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto as "research".
