Civil Law · Ontario, Canada
Lawyer · LEXALTICO LLP · Mississauga
A corporate lawyer licensed in Ontario and Alberta, advising on corporate and commercial matters, entertainment, estates and real estate.
Matthew Ram is a Partner at Lexaltico LLP, acting in real estate, corporate and commercial, and entertainment law. He read Economics at the University of Toronto, took his Juris Doctor at the University of Detroit Mercy in Michigan, was called to the Ontario Bar in 2015, and is also licensed to practise in Alberta.
He built his Alberta real estate practice around a straightforward observation: that province's transactions could be closed faster than they were being closed. He began his own practice on the idea of mobile legal services, taking the signing to the client rather than the client to the office, and built the file handling around communication and speed. That approach brought him working relationships across the Alberta real estate industry and a practice known for moving quickly without loosening the diligence.
His interest in entrepreneurship and in music opened two further parts of the practice. On the start-up side he advises founders on incorporation, structure and the agreements that decide who owns what before it matters. On the music side he acts on recording agreements, publishing agreements, producer agreements and joint ventures with record labels, and he has acted for platinum level producers and for a number of well known Canadian artists. Work he has done for clients has been associated with a Billboard number one on the Top R and B Hip Hop Albums chart and with RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications.
Because he is also a corporate lawyer, entertainment clients tend to stay with him past the contract and into the business itself. He acts as business manager for a recording artist signed to a major Canadian label, and as president of that artist's company, which means he sees what a deal looks like three years after signature rather than only on the day it is signed.
